Five questions to ask before buying motor insurance in Nigeria

Third-party or comprehensive? What is actually excluded? A short checklist before you commit to a motor policy.

1. Third-party or comprehensive? Third-party cover is the legal minimum and pays for damage you cause to others; comprehensive also covers your own vehicle, including theft and fire, at a higher premium.

2. What exactly is excluded? Most policies exclude certain use cases (e.g. commercial use on a personal policy) or driver conditions. Ask for the exclusions list, not just the headline coverage.

3. How is a claim actually filed, and how long does assessment typically take? Ask this before you buy, not after an accident.

4. Is there an excess (the amount you pay out of pocket per claim), and how much is it for the cover you are choosing?

5. Is the insurer NAICOM-licensed, and is the policy document itself clear about who underwrites it? On TIIN, every listed motor product answers this by design — but it is a good habit to check anywhere you buy.
